So you want to start a business?: 5 Ways to Take Inspired Action Towards Your Goal

We are closing in on the last 4 weeks of this century….holy cow!? Where has the time gone? I honestly remember when it was Y2K and we were worried that all of the ATMs might go haywire as the year changed from 1999 to 2000. Wah Wah nothing happened. Sometimes technology is smarter than we think.

And here we are moving into 2020 and I know we’ve all got big a$$ scary goals because I know this community is a bunch of goal getters.

Not only that but I talk to SO many people who desperately want to start their own thing but they have no idea where to start. And trust me I know a thing or two about that. I was in the same boat just over 2 years ago, miserable in my job with this big, scary looming thought of “I know I’m meant to do my own thing. But where do I even start?”

So I decided to reflect back on that time and think about how I took inspired action towards my goal of becoming self-employed and starting my own creative agency. Hopefully this will help you take even the tiniest of baby steps towards that wonderful goal of yours. Because action is action and you’d be surprised once you take that first step how quickly you realize you’re actually doing the damn thing!

First I want to take a moment to introduce something that has been coming up for me a lot lately and it’s called “inspired action.” When I heard those words together my brain was like YES! This is what I’m talking about. Inspired action feels aligned with your truth, it feels like a whole hearted Heck YES and it feels meaningful.

So here are 5 ways you can take inspired action towards your goal of starting a business because your gifts are worth sharing so let’s get started!

Don’t have a “formal” business. Who cares!? Start talking about it as if do.

Long before I had business cards or even a website I started talking to just about anyone that would listen letting them know that Yes, I was in fact a website designer.

This was great. Not only did I get to feel what it felt like to say that and check in to make sure that it was a Heck Yes but I also got to spread the word and you better believe some of my very first clients came from those conversations.

Don’t just talk about it, start creating content about it!

Did you know that even before you have a business you can start marketing that business? If there is one piece of advice I could give you it would be to start creating valuable content today.

Whether it’s posts on Instagram, Facebook Lives, YouTube or a basic blog, any content you create will be worth it’s weight in gold when you officially launch your business. So just start. Right now!

Start building your portfolio/testimonials.

Long before I actually had a website or a formal business I started building websites for friends, on trade or at a deep discount because as a service provider I knew that having legit testimonials were going to be crucial to my start up success.

Don’t be afraid to reach out to friends, family or even post online that you’re looking to grow your portfolio and are offering these services. But take this advice…don’t work for free too long. Once you feel confident and have a few client backing up your skills and expertise you best be getting paid!

Get clear on your “Why.”

Step number 1 in building any business/brand is getting super clear on your “Why.” Why do you want to start this in the first place? A great place to start is by watching the Simon Sinek talk “Start with why.

“People don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it.” – Simon Sinek

That reframed everything for me. People want to feel connected with the people they work with. Your why could very well be the thing that sets you apart from everyone else. So start by getting super clear on that.

Reach out for help.

The best investment I have ever made in my business was hiring someone to help me from the very beginning. And that beautiful soul’s name is Jacki Carr. Jacki is a goal coach based in Evergreen, CO and she was and still is an incredible resource in my business. She helped me launch Tribe Creative Co. and has always been there when I’m just about to throw in the towel to help me get clear and take inspired action.

Since then I’ve hired a business coach, a content writer and reached out to Jacki on more occasions than I can remember. If you’re sitting in that state of analysis paralysis just save yourself the time and bring someone in to help.

Getting clear before you take action is action! And we’ve created a way for you to get clear before diving into the full investment of a website and brand design.

As I was reflecting back on the past few years in business I realized that there was a big piece missing. So many people long before they dive into a website design or branding project just need some guidance and I wanted to give clients the chance to feel super empowered and educated on what this journey looks like.
